Simon Phipps is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Scottish Lithotriptor Centre, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh and St John’s Hospital, Livingston. He practises in all areas of general urology, with his main subspecialty interest being the minimally invasive management of urinary stone disease.
He qualified from Nottingham University Medical School in 1997 and trained in general urology in the East of Scotland. His subspeciality training took him to Australia, where he spent a fellowship year training in upper tract laparoscopy and endourology at the St George Hospitals in Sydney, before returning to Scotland as fellow in endourology at the Scottish Lithotriptor Centre in Edinburgh. Simon has developed subspecialty expertise in Extracoporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy, rigid and flexible ureteroscopy with laser stone fragmentation, and percutaneous stone surgery.
Whilst in training, Simon undertook an innovative 2-year research project into the relationship of prostatic tissue mechanical characteristics with benign and malignant prostate disease at the University of Edinburgh for which he was awarded the DM degree. He has written basic scientific papers in peer reviewed journals, reviews and book chapters and continues to publish papers on the clinical aspect of urinary stone disease. Simon is active in teaching and training in Urology in the East of Scotland, as well as regularly contributing to British Association of Urological Surgeons and Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh surgical training courses.
