Mr. Ammar Alhasso

Mr Alhasso gained wide urological experience through the East Scotland Urology Training Scheme and took up his current post as a Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Western General Hospital and Borders General Hospital, He provides both general urology expertise, and sub-specialisation in genito-urethral reconstruction, and functional urology.

Reconstructive and Functional Urology:
Management of urethral stricture disease, including Optilume® drug-coated balloon treatment and urethroplasty. Treatment of male urinary incontinence, including artificial urinary sphincter implantation and male sling surgery, as well as female urinary incontinence, including autologous fascial sling and urethral bulking agent injections. Specialist management of bladder dysfunction, including idiopathic and neurogenic overactive bladder, with intradetrusor botulinum toxin injections and neuromodulation therapies such as sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS). Expertise in functional bladder assessment, including video-urodynamics (videocystometrography).

General Urology:
Assessment and management of a broad range of urological conditions, including the investigation of haematuria (blood in the urine), assessment and initial management of urological cancers, erectile dysfunction, and penile and scrotal surgery.

Prostatic Disease and Prostate Cancer:
Comprehensive assessment, investigation, and management of prostate cancer, including risk stratification, diagnostic pathways, and treatment planning. Specialist assessment and treatment of benign prostatic enlargement, including GreenLight laser prostatectomy, Robotic-assisted Aquablation therapy, and bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).

He was a research fellow at Imperial College School of Medicine, University of London studying bladder cancer and achieved a Masters degree in Surgical Sciences in 2000. He is also a reviewer for the Cochrane Collaboration/Incontinence group and have published systematic reviews and meta-analyses on urinary incontinence in men and women. A member of the International Continence Society, European Association of Urology and the British Association of Urological Surgeons.

With commitment to training and education, Ammar is Associate Editor for BJUI Knowledge for Reconstructive Urology and former module lead for the online ChM postgraduate degree in Urology at Edinburgh University Medical School and also teaches on the core skills for urologist course at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
